Sony to Continue Producing Smartphones for the Foreseeable Future
When it comes to smartphones, Apple, Samsung, OnePlus, Google, and Xiaomi are the brands that usually come to mind. Sony may not be the top choice for most people, but the company is still working on its own phones and intends to continue doing so in the coming years.
Sony has signed a multi-year agreement with Qualcomm to use Snapdragon platforms as a power source for its phones. This is a continuation of the agreement between the parties. Qualcomm chipsets will be used in Sony’s upcoming premium devices and high-end and mid-range smartphones.
Sony introduced the awkwardly named Xperia 1 V just last month. The smartphone runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 Mobile Platform and is aimed at photographers and vloggers. These are relatively niche use cases, although Sony is able to leverage its camera technology to help users capture high-quality photos and videos. Xperia 1 V can be used as a monitor for compatible Sony Alpha cameras. Still, Sony continues to charge a premium for its high-end Xperia smartphones – the 1 V starts at $1,400.
The company also introduced the mid-range Xperia 10 V for the first time in May. It has a Snapdragon 695 chipset and a 60Hz, 1080p OLED display. Sony started selling the phone in Europe this month for £399 or €449 (about $500).
